Millennials' State of the Union: Michael Lista, Canadian Poet

Our latest Millennials' State of the Union chat is with Michael Lista, a Canadian poet based in Toronto. This is one of several pieces of our conversation with Lista that we'll be running this week, as our talk with him was heady, wonderful and lengthy. In particular, he shares how he thinks the Obama Administrations looks from just north of the Union. Here he specifically addresses his perception of the impact of the passage of Supreme Court's ruling on Public Citizens United versus the Federal Elections Commission on the future of the United States.

Michael's book of poems Bloom will be released by House of Anansi Press this April.

Points of particular interest:

What will have the most impact over American life will have been the Supreme Court ruling Citizens Unlimited Versus the Federal Elections Commission.
Coming from someone who is left, but not "crazily left," the great evil in America is the corporation, and the fact that in the same way that ruling from 1866 defined what a corporation is, that it is a human being, this defines how they can behave, how they can speak."
"There is no question that it benefits no one but Republicans to allow for corporations to speak freely in endorsing a candidate, that is something that every single American should be outraged by."
"It's such a travesty that corporations - these inhuman gollums - are having their First Amendment rights enshrined by the Supreme Court, and yet 10 percent of the population - homosexuals - can't marry. That shows you how perverted a country America is becoming. That is the thing that people should be terrified about - that the middle and working class are being eviscerated for these cancers of enterprise. I think that if they want to do anything, they should rally hard to make sure that that judgement is repealed and that future judgements are prevented.
