Millennials' State of the Union: Sarah Burris of Future Majority

Our Millennials' State of the Union conversation continues with this chat with Sarah Burris, Managing Editor of Future Majority. She describes Future Majority as:

an online, progressive youth blog which discusses youth politics and policy from the youth perspective. During the 2008 election specifically, [Future Majority] carried the torch to explain to activist groups, local candidates, and anyone who would listen why young people are going to be a huge deal, why they're important, and how to reach out to them. [They delved into everything from] best practices to how to talk about specific issues. They have since moved onto focusing on the policies coming out of Washington.

Points of particular interest:

When asked where the Millennials were in the Massachusetts Senate vote, Sarah explains that it is possible that nobody did any meaningful outreach to young people, a now somewhat-persistent standard with elections. The Obama campaign was unique in its capitalization of youth organizing, namely peer-to-peer outreach. Starting in 2000 there has been a steady increase in youth participation, political engagement, and voting. (Sarah sent an email immediately after our interview, which points to a study done by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement. She has since published a blog entry about the results — which show that the youth turnout was "just 15% compared to the 25% that came out for the presidential" — here on Future Majority.)
Sarah points out that in 2004, the Kerry campaign had only one youth organizer, thus this is illustrative of how much has shifted with regard to the trust in youth/impotance of youth has occurred in a relatively short period of time (as so many young people were engaged during the Obama campaign). Her guess is that this reality was not fully embraced in Massachusetts, a trend she is also seeing reoccur in Senate campaigns already. This is dangerous because it perpetuates the "young people don't show up" stereotype. "The reality is," she says, "that young people show up whenever you ask them to and make them a part of the discussion. Barack Obama did that in a unique way."
Asked of how well OFA has done with regard to staying in touch with and engaging young people, Sarah says that "It has been a nightmare." Lists of supporters were dumped into databases and as a result volunteer opportunities and other opportunities for engagement went relatively non-targeted. Further, there is no regional understanding of how organizing happens, thus focusing on issues that show no hope of changing in the near future is a waste of time, as they could be mobilizing at the state level or around the next issue. The loss of specificity has led to misappropriated and wasted time.
With regard to engaging the youth, some politicians and elected officials "get it" and some don't. Speaker [Pelosi's] Office and Representative [George] Miller's office (Chair of Committee on Education and Labor) are "unbelievable in their outreach to young people because they get it." They're also good at following up by way of mobilizing said young people around specific legislation.
What Sarah sees as the White Houses biggest failure with regard to the health care debate is that they have allowed the millennial generation to go as an untapped resource. Not only does this generation contain the most Obama voters, it continues to be the largest base of support for the administration and health care reform legislation generally. Thus millennials remain unengaged as they are not being asked to or brought into the discussion. Millennials could help to change the tone of the debate but they were not asked to participate. As a result, older crowds such as the "Teabagger movement" (where, Sarah insists, you won't find many millennials) set the tone for debate.
When it comes to upcoming energy legislation, this will not be the case, Sarah explains. The organizations fighting in support of energy legislation have all capitalized on young people and youth movement. The millennial generation will be hugely mobilized around this issue.
Moving forward, young people need to be brought back into the debate. Millennials need to be asked, "How can we get you involved? What's going to work best for you? What are you interested in doing?" Ideas need to be listened to, and this needs to be translated into a prompt for action.
